BS/MD Programs With Late Deadlines You Can Still Apply To
As the dust settles after the application frenzy of the November 1 early deadlines, students hoping for a seat in a BS/MD program might be re-evaluating their college lists. Direct Medical programs are known for being the most competitive programs in the college admissions game, often comparable to Ivy League admissions. Students might be wondering if they have applied to enough schools to secure one of these coveted spots.
Thankfully, there are a few BS MD programs with December and January deadlines, leaving time for a few last-minute additions to college lists.
The University of South Alabama offers students interested in studying in the south a late deadline option for its College of Medicine Early Acceptance Program. With a deadline of December 15, the application to this program only requires one additional supplemental essay. Preference is given to Alabama residents, and there are lower entrance requirements for in-state applicants, out-of-state students with an ACT score of 30 or an SAT score of 1360 are still encouraged to apply.
Florida Atlantic University is a school that should be on every BS/MD student’s list. Add a late deadline of January 10 to the equation, and the Wilkes Medical Scholars Program is a smart option. This 7- or 8-year program considers students with an ACT score of 33 or an SAT score of 1490 as well as a 4.3 weighted overall grade point average. The application for the Wilkes Medical Scholars Program requires three additional supplemental essays.
Northwestern University is often found at the top of every BS MD list for its prestigious Honors Program in Medical Education. It’s BS/MD application process is a bit more complicated than traditional applications, requiring applicants to apply to the undergraduate program in October through December, followed by requesting the Honors Program in Medical Education application, which is then due January 2. This 7-year program admits only the highest caliber of applicants, with an average ACT score of 35 or an SAT score of 1550, in addition to grades at the top percent of their graduating class.
Washington University in St. Louis has the earliest application date on our list, December 10. The W & J Medical Scholars Program is an 8-year program encouraging applicants who have achieved an ACT score of 31 or an SAT score of 1350, and rank in the top 5% of their graduating class to apply. The program also recommends applicants demonstrate leadership and healthcare experiences on their application.
The University of Nevada, Reno offers applicants the latest deadline on our list, January 22, allowing time for many students to hear admissions decisions from a few other schools before applying to their 7-year program. Their BS/MD Accelerated Early Admission Program encourages Nevada residents who have achieved an ACT score of 28 or an SAT score of 1320, and a 3.65 overall grade point average to apply.
Brooklyn College: The City University of New York offers students hoping to experience college in close proximity to New York City a chance to apply to their 8-year program by December 12. Their Coordinated BA/MD Program offers 15 potential seats to residents from New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut.
SUNY Polytechnic Institute has recently partnered with SUNY Upstate Medical University for the upcoming class of 2020 to offer another BS/MD program in the state of New York. With an application deadline of December 15, their Upstate Accelerated Scholars encourages applicants who have achieved an ACT score of 29 or an SAT score of 1360, and a 3.5 overall grade point average to apply. The requirement to take the MCAT before medical school is waived for these Scholars, increasing the competition for the five coveted seats in this program.
Stony Brook University boasts another of our latest deadlines on our list with a deadline of January 15. This 8-year program provides built-in small study groups and undergraduate mentors to help students feel supported through their classes. With only one additional supplemental essay, applicants to the Scholars for Medicine Program are encouraged to apply if they have achieved an ACT score of 34 or an SAT score of 1490 and a 3.9 overall grade point average.
Sophie Davis Biomedical Education is partnered with the CUNY School of Medicine for their 7-year BS MD program for New York resident applicants. With an application deadline of January 8 and three additional supplemental essays to accompany the application, the Biomedical Science Program encourages applicants with a minimum grade average of 85% to apply.
